EduRecon-A Coastal Observation and Reconnaissance Network

Connecting universities to observe coastal change, prepare for extreme events, and train the next generation of reconnaissance professionals. EduRecon focusses specifically on how we educate, train, mentor and prepare early-career researchers and engineers for future coastal hazards. It is a multi-university education and workforce development network that develops, shares and evaluates transferable approaches for preparing students and early-career researchers for interdisciplinary extreme-event reconnaissance.

How it works

PREPARE

University teams train their students in field methods, safety, equipment, and shared data protocols.

OBSERVE

Partner teams collect baseline data and monitor selected coastal sites before storms occur.

RECON

After a storm, trained teams support safe and coordinated field investigations to document coastal impacts.

LEARN

Teams analyze and share data, evaluate lessons learned, and use field observations to improve training, models and future reconnaissance planning.

What is EduRecon?

EduRecon is a distributed education, workforce development and research network for coastal reconnaissance.

Using UCF CoastKnights as an initial implementation hub, EduRecon links education with year-round coastal observation, event reconnaissance, modeling, experimental facilities and data-to-decision workflows.

The goal is to build a prepared coastal reconnaissance workforce and an active user community that strengthens, rather than duplicates, existing NHERI programs and infrastructure.
